Promotional Logo Pens Made The Contest Bigger

At a young age, I have been involved in the annual spelling bee in our school. For some unknown reason, I loved spelling. Back then, if you’re a contestant, they call you a lot of names: nerd, bookworm, weirdo, just to name a few. Nobody except a handful wanted to join, but I think when the school started to give out rollerball pens, things started to turn around.
For two consecutive years, we had the same contestants. I knew all their names because there are only a few of us. Nobody watched except our teachers, and the games were held only in a classroom. But on the third year, they gave out promotional logo pens days before the event. All the other kids liked it. The pens had pictures of comic characters that had the contest date on it.
I remember having to push my way through the corridor of the school to get to the spelling contest classroom. The principal again gave out promotional logo ballpoint pens by the door before the match started. That was a brilliant move, because the students were led into the event itself.
Now that I have “retired” from my spelling career, I still keep those promotional logo high tech pens that my teacher gave me as gifts for winning the event. It’s a big school occasion now, and I just learned that they had to have a screening process to limit the contestants who want to join. Things have really come a long way from when it started. Contestants are not called names anymore, but are treated as stars by their classmates.
